Reading List - part 2

I finally made it to the neighbourhood library. I must say I am impressed with the Marine Parade Community Club (so much more of Singapore I have not discovered).

The library has five floors but it is serba tak lengkap (Malay: incomplete/ incomprehensive) in its collection. I was looking for Hemingway and they don’t carry his books. I have to go to the national library branch at Bishan! Too late, paid $10 for membership- might as well make full use of it for the rest of the time I am going to be here.

You could only borrow four books each time and I did (kiasuism alert).

What to do when you have rows and rows of books and do not know where to start. I wished Carol or Joyce were around.

So I found my way to rack MA and my eyes caught this book called Samarkand, by Amin Maalouf, a Lebanese. It was about a man who was accused of misinterpreting the Quran and was jailed but the judge instead, gave him a book with empty pages to pen his thoughts for the latter’s private audience.

I've not read stories that are open about Islam and of being a Muslim. That intrigued me. However, Amin’s best book was supposed to be The Rock of Tanios, about a Lebanese boy who lived in the mountains.

The book started with this: In our village, the rocks have names.

How can I not want to read on? Samarkand will have to wait. Amin has this other book that also captured my interest. It is called The First Century After Beatrice and the story is about the discovery of a native seed that could help bring about the birth of baby boys only. The synopsis alluded to how the scientist who discovered it wrestles with the possible commercialization of this seed and how the world would tilt at the edge of catastrophe thus.

Mmmm… let’s see if this first book makes good reading. The few books I’ve read translated from French have been quite enjoyable.

My second and third books were also from rack MA (once your eyes stop roving, they appreciate what is around the focus point).

Book No.2 : The Noodle Maker by Ma Jian, translated from Chinese.

Ma apparently wrote the award winning Red Dust (which I could not locate). I didn’t even read the synopsis because Ma Jian was touted the Chinese Kundera. That is, Milan Kundera the Czech communist aspirant who wrote the Unbearable Lightness of Being (which was quite unbearable).

Joyce said I should have started with Kundera’s The Story of Laughter and Forgetting, which I latter borrowed and never finished because it was also unbearably bleak. I believe I also could not fully appreciate his literature because of the yawning gap between the culture his protagonists, the zeitgeist of their time, and mine.

Still, I am quite keen to give Ma’s Noodle Maker a chance.

Book No.3 : Portuguese Irregular Verbs by Alexander McCall Smith (I have no idea why he is put under MA).

If you think it is a book on Portuguese grammar then you don’t know me at all. It’s part of a trilogy and I was first caught by the third book entitled At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances. The second book is called The Finer Point of Sausage Dogs. It would really irritate me not to start with the first book.

Book No.4 : Love, Life and Linguine by Melissa Jacobs (not from MA, just thought I’d let you know).

It’s supposed to be light and funny. That's all that needs to be said when you are on to your fourth book! I need variety in my readings or I WILL turn into Plain Jane surely.

C’est tout!

Nicholas John Thomson

Once upon a time there was a little five year old Chinese boy who was really cute. He wondered why it is that he didn't have an English name like some of his other friends. He decided to give himself one except he didn't know that many English names. So he amalgamated the few he could find from his elder sister's books and a TV show.

Thus he proclaimed himself Nicholas John Thomson because since there are three syllables in a Chinese name, there ought to be three names for an English name, too!

How clever, hor?

The thing with vanity

There is no stop to it if you don’t put your foot down.

Beauty/ Spa/ Wellness (whatever) centres always try to get you to buy a package so that they lock you in. With the package you get discounts, cheaper deals etc, but really, the mark up was stratospheric to begin with so that in the end you are still nowhere near the earth.

What to do… We girls have to “maintain” our good looks. It’s our prerogative/ right/ privilege/ burden (whatever).

(If you are the “practical” sort then think of it as making the economy go round and boosting the services industry and your social security as soon we would be paying higher GST).

So I went for my overdue facial today. Skin looks like she is really in need of help so the sharks are going in for the kill.

“Why don’t you do this treatment called IPL?”
“What's that?”
“It is a light treatment that sends ‘energin’ into your skin to reduce uneven skin tone, lighten pigmentation spots, reduce large pores and oil glands. It’s very effective and you won’t even need to do a facial because the energin will boost the inner healing outwards.”

WHOA! Sisters, say it again with me: WHOA!

Sounds great? Except it costs 2.5x more than my usual facial. But…. Remember that packaged deal???

“You can deduct it from your package, we are very flexible with that.” I bet.

I have 2.5 months more in Singapore but enough points to last for the next six months if I keep to my usual facial. So I decided to try this very promising IPL (I did read through the entire booklet to show them I am no fool).

The moment I completed the treatment, the beautician recommended me this “new” treatment they just introduced, did I get the mailer? I probably threw it out.

It is called the Caviar Treatment. (What on earth???)

“How much is it?”
“Its only $135 and you get a free facial with it.”
“Can I deduct it from my package?”
“No, because this is promotion.” The ubiquitous clause. Remember she was very flexible just moments before.

“Right now it is very cheap. Usually it costs $350 without the facial”.
(What on earth??? Beluga caviar doesn’t cost that much at the restaurant!!)

I really had no intention to purchase fish eggs. I really hate this pushiness. But I decided to play along.

“So what does this caviar do?”
“It has a lot of protein (duh!! they are eggs!!) and we massage it into your face. It makes your face looks smoother.”

I’m like…please give me a better ultimate achievement for that price. Promise me endless blue skies and constant warm sea breeze while you are at it.

And I want my usual beautician.

“Thanks, but I won’t want to buy anything that I cannot deduct from my package.” The one that has enough points to last till August which I have to finish by April, remember?

“Then you should do the IPL every three weeks. You can really see the difference after three treatments.” Sure.

At this point, I am just doing the maths. That would serve the goal of using up all my points before I leave. What the heck… I am vain. I am woman.

A family of angels

I had a file in which I placed all the documents for my visa application to UK. It had my completed application form, my last three months’ pay slips and bank statements, my expired passport and my current passport.

The file was white in colour and it matched the chairs at the Holland Village food court. After dinner with Justine, I took my bag and forgot about the file, and we headed to our cellgroup meeting.

Fifteen minutes later, a stranger rang me and asked “Are you Nicole?” Yes. “Are you looking for something?”

I still did not realise anything and I was like, “Who is this?”

He said he is at the hawker centre and if I had left something behind. I gasped.

He asked what is it that I lost and I listed out all the items for him. He said he is still at the hawker centre with my file and I RAN from the 9th floor down. Halfway down the stairs, my bank calls me and says a person by the name of Jason found my bank statements and if I still had my ATM card with me. I said yes, please don’t cancel anything.

That’s how I found out his name was Jason. He got my number from my application form. He apologized that he had to look through all my details. He had even called my bank to ask them to contact me because of my passport. The bank was not helpful to him and he was mad at them.

I could not thank him, his wife and their three little kids enough. For being my angels tonight.

I cannot imagine how devastated I would be if I had lost all those documents and my passport. Thank you, God, for watching over me and my belongings. Amen.

(I wrote this posting after returning from CG last night)

Sean + Jenn

Sean + Jenn= Seanne
Sean + Jenn= Jeanne
Sean + Jenn= Jean...

Sean and Jenn are having a baby :) [very big smile after getting tired from jumping around]

I was quite surprised when Sean called me in the middle of the day. Sean never calls me in the middle of the day. Sean never calls me, almost.

He said, “Yeng? Jenn wants to talk to you”. My heart was on the verge of pounding. I don’t like surprises and a midday call during a normal workday when both of them were supposed to be at work signals something isn’t normal.

“Yeng? I am pregnant!!”

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn’t keep to my seat!!!!!! Jenn was still holding on to the pregnancy test strip. I could hear trembling in her voice.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

How do I describe the feeling after having shared with your dearest friends [some of] their trials, perseverance, hopes, disappointments, and then now their joy?

I am really, really so happy for them. And truly praise God. He makes all things beautiful in His time, and His timing is perfect :)

Jenn: I was actually planning something for Valentine’s…
Yeng: Well, now there is no pressure!!

Dear Baby, you have amazing parents. I love them to bits because they are the most sincere, kind, generous, gracious, and genuine people on earth and I love them to bits (have I said this already?).

I love them not because I’ve known them since I was 14.
I love them not because I grew up with them together with the entire SJGC bunch.
I love them not because your dad is a real joker and corny joker and one of the most easy going guys around who was quite cute when he was younger.
I love them not because your mom is so sweet and pretty and thoughtful and has a heart of gold and one that seeks to love and please God.
I love them not because they came to my house when I was sad and cried with me and prayed for me.
I love them not because they went on a holiday with me to visit the Chans in Melbourne.
I love them not because they brought me lollipops and cut mangoes when I was stressed studying for CFA level 1 (which I failed).
I love them not because they had the most beautiful wedding I ever attended because they are so loved by people all around them.
I love them not because they go the extra, extra miles for people around them.
I love because of all these things and the much, much more words cannot express.

Baby, you have wonderful and beautiful parents. And I pray you would be both of them combined and more, with the grace of God. AMEN.

Love you, Aunty Nicole

Cyber twilight zone

Strange phenomena in the office.

Strangeness No. 1:
My office’s server is full. Can servers be full? That we have used up the space in one particular server of a limited size is not strange. That we have such a small server for a company that creates content is.

Strangeness No.2:
As a result of Strangeness No. 1, each team has been instructed to transfer old files into our own form of extra storage. Some mulled over burning CDs (no brain-er, literally) and it was actually considered. Someone (ahem) cleverly suggests we buy an external storage but nobody in her team wanted to listen. Strangeness, indeed.

Strangeness No.3:
Someone else from another team with more money went ahead and bought the external storage and kindly let other teams put our stuff in it. Someone who is even smarter started to create a route to that external storage on everyone’s computer. So yours truly started to remove files by client accounts into the new X-drive. Boss went into X-drive to look for a particular client’s files and found no client file. Na-da. Not there. Gone. No more. (!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)

Strangeness No.4:
Yours truly checked X-drive and the files were indeed there! But not so from boss’ computer!! Strangeness of all strangeness. So yours truly dutifully copied all those trillions of megabytes- taking hours and a toll on the processing speed- back to the old server. Now we have two copies of these clients’ files- one in the original drive and one in “X-drive”.

Strangeness No.5:
The person who mapped my computer to X-drive could not trace where my “X-drive” really is in our servers or the cyberspace. Mine is the only computer routed to this “place” because everyone else’s computer reads from the same OTHER external drive!!!!!

Strangeness No. 6:
I am still pulling out files from this cyber twilight zone. It will be my personal storage since no one else can find it and knows it exists.

Ooooh….
