A sort-of love story

There are two chairs at the back of the living hall. I call it a hall because my grandparents’ kampong house has an immensely large living area. My grandparents sit on those chairs all the time. They especially enjoyed doing that when we are all home. The sit there quietly, listening to our chatter and observing us. And I observe them. And hope that there will always be both, together.

On the second day he was hospitalized (yesterday), Auntie Lai Keen drove back to Ipoh. She brought grandma to the hospital. After some hours, she told granddad that grandma should go home and rest. Granddad started to cry. I have never seen granddad cry.

This morning, grandma told Auntie Lai Keen that granddad would use the massager and massager her shoulders. Nobody had done that in two days and her shoulders had gone stiff. Auntie Lai Keen started to tear again when she told me that just now.

You see, my grandparents are the most loving couple in my whole family. All their children could not emulate that in their own marriages.

And you know, my grandparents almost didn’t marry each other. They weren’t supposed to.

My aunties always tease my granddad about marrying the wrong girl. The occasion of their marriage was not all clear. Apparently, granddad was supposed to marry someone called Loke Mooi. I supposed he never met that girl he was supposed to marry. But he ended up with my grandma.

Grandma told me once, long ago, that she wouldn’t know what would have happened to her if she did not marry my grandfather. Grandma came for the kind of poverty you only see in olden Chinese drama series. She was never educated and she could not read or count (but boy, has good memory). She patched her clothes with pieces of cloths. Her mother died before she turned a teenager. Her dad was killed by the Japanese.

She told me once, her brother got a job as a seamstress (can men be called seamstress?) in a hospital. He had to made uniforms in white. He took the left over white pieces of clothes and made a dress for my grandmother. She was ecstatic. A dress! In white! Unfortunately, the material creases quite a bit. “But you know, if you lay down the dress neatly under your mattress and sleep on it, you flatten out the creases,” she said. And when she went around in the white dress, she said she got lots of compliments. “Wah.. Ah Moi, you look so pretty!” Grandma would laugh even as she tells me that (she told me this story a few times before)

Granddad on the other hand, never told stories. Not that we did not ask.

But everybody looked up to him. He had two years of primary education. His grandfather came from China and he was a tutor. He had one son- my granddad’s father- who was a useless person and an opium addict. So my great-great-granddad raised my granddad and his only elder sister.

Granddad, before this stroke, reads the Chinese newspaper diligently everyday. He educated himself. He even knows some English words! He worked for the Straits Timber Company and I think they had buyers/ suppliers from overseas and spoke English. So granddad picked up technical terms in English.

Actually, he did tell me stories. In an even longer time ago. I only remember that he worked at odd jobs to begin with. He even worked in a quarry and he said he once climbed the limestone hills of Ipoh to cut marble!

Granddad built his own family. The house on Jalan Jelapang Chemor was completely rebuilt by him. That’s where I grew up for the first five years of my life when my parents were too poor to care for me in KL. Granddad was generous with his relatives. He was not rich but he managed to send my dad to India to study engineering. He was even going to send my second uncle to UK, but the academic inclination stopped at the eldest son (my dad).

Grandma’s life, of course, transformed when she married granddad. They were strangers!!!

She never knew how to cook because she was never taught, she said. So my granddad’s aunties took her under their wings and educated her from scratch. Grandma remains one of the best cooks I know. Some of her dishes have no competition. None of my aunties cook as well.

A few years back, granddad’s car broke down and was left at the workshop for a few days. My grandparents go out for breakfast every morning (yum cha). I remember calling Chemor at that time and had a chat with grandma. I think I was in London. I asked her how would they go yum-cha when ye-ye’s car is in the workshop? Ah-ma said “we got on the bicycle”. And did I laugh!

Grandma is actually quite spoilt. By all of us. She laments on small pains and worries constantly. She goes to the doctor every few weeks. Granddad never complains. He dutifully drives her to Ipoh to see the doctor and dutifully returns to get her medicine. He attends to all her whims.

Grandma fusses over granddad. When I was a little girl, she made him his SunQuick orange juice everyday so that it was ready whenever he comes back from work. I would hide behind a wall of the house and try to ‘scare’ granddad as he gets out of the car. He let me scare him and sometimes carried me into the house. Then I would bring him his glass of juice and grandma would tell me to be careful. Each time. He gulps it down. Each time.

Now she makes him his Milo. She nags him about drinking too much liqueur (but only because it is the form of endearment she knows).

Auntie Lai Keen said grandma never shed a tear since granddad was hospitalised. I said grandma has had lots of time to think. Everyday, as she sits on her lazy chair. She thinks.

We asked grandma to come to KL for a visit, many times. She says she needs to take care of her chickens. She has no chickens now because she can’t walk well. She still refuses to come. We would tease her for not telling the real reason- she just wants to be with my granddad. To spend every little moment they have together, together.

Prayer for Granddad

Father in heaven,

Please send your angels to watch over my granddad. Please give insight and knowledge to the doctors and nurses to make the right diagnosis and give the right treatment.

Father please hold granddad in your arms and keep him from harm. I pray you will cover him with the blood of Christ- the blood of Christ that heals and protects. I pray you will also have mercy and lead granddad to salvation. Please speak to his heart and his mind about the things of heaven, about your love for him, and Christ’s love for him. Please comfort him and let his mind not be confused. Arrest his worries and bad thoughts and fill his mind with your light and his heart with your peace.

Please send your angels to watch over grandma who is at home alone also. Please guard her mind from thinking about negative things. Speak to her, also, Lord. Appear to her whether in thoughts or in form and invite her into your Kingdom. And I pray Lord, you will be faithful to your promises.

You put me into this family and you saved me. I am the only one to pray for the whole family. But I know without me, no one else will, and this is part of your plan. You love my family and you put me here for them. Be faithful now Lord, and exercise you power and salvation on every member of my family. Extend to them your grace and mercy and write their names in your Book of Life.

Holy Spirit, please go into my grandparent’s home and wash away all that is not of Christ and The Father. Cleanse all the spirits that hold and harm in the name of Christ. And turn every heart of the member of my family to Christ.

I am praying Lord. Please hear from heaven and answer.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Technical report 26 Dec05

In case you are wondering- I don't write many entries and post them at one shot. Sometimes I write in the spur of the moment and it is not convenient to post them at once.

I have not figured out how to cheat either- upload a few entries and have the system post them for me at selected intervals. Ha ha!

No, have not figured out photos yet either.

Ends

Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps Love

She stayed him because he was a big shot director and she was an upstart actress. He had this dream of making a movie about a pair of young lovers. It starts with them by the green meadows, and ends with them by the lake. He made many more movies for her and they forgot about this one. He lets go of the woman he thought loved him and found his dream again. She remembers why she kept by his side for so long. It was for that movie.

He loved her for ten years. He came from the past to confront the present. Is there closure in the end?

Can she love two men at the same time?

Two turtle doves and tsunami anniversary

The BBQ turned out great in spite of the rain and drizzle. Family and friends can mix. Too bad Cheeks left so early- antisocial.

We played cards till 1am. It was actually mostly us trying to teach Lok and Chia Hui how to play chor-tai-dee. We should have played Up and Down the River, except I forgot how.

It was a lot of work cleaning up. Mom and dad are so wonderful in helping to prepare and clean up. It was all worth it. Have I started a tradition? I always seem to build something good at the very end of a journey.

I got the most ingenious and sweet and creative presents. I am so loved :)

1 A pair of unisex boxers in black and pink that says PornStar right across the bum. Except it is in size M and hangs on my hips. Size S would have PornStar stretched across just nicely.
2 A pot of germinating brinjal seeds.
3 A pair of fluffy thick and soft house slippers in yellow, pink and orange, comes with a colour coordinated bath towel.
5 Lancome juicy lipstick in a rich mauve
6 Bright orange striped anything-goes-in-there bag
7 Three very touching messages in a card
8 Two more very touching cards

9 Work of fiction by Terry Pratchett, whose books I've never read
10 Loveliest moistest fruitcake by Auntie Eng Lee (I devoured 1/3 this morning and I DON'T EVEN LIKE FRUITCAKES)
11. A call from Pastor Michael!
12. A call from the Chans in Melbourne and hearing Ethan's voice again (melting)

I am most tempted to do the impulsive and buy a ticket to Kota Kinabalu for the New Year. But I have made financial pledges elsewhere. In exchange, maybe I will organize a hiking trip- Lok has agreed to lead if I do every other bit of the organizing.

The stories and videos from the tsunami anniversary make me sad. I will report from Galle in February. Watch this space.

Transience

So HSBC has this new security device for Internet banking. It would seem fancy thus impress some.

Methinks it is bollocks. Why would I want another device in order to do Internet banking? So that each time I need to access my account I must get another security code from this device. What if I do Internet backing at multiple access points? I need to carry this thing all around. What if I lose it? Another trip to the bank. Beats the purpose of Internet banking. And what if this device ran out of battery? I have to go GET battery. Do I? And the box doesn't say.

I thought the whole purpose of Internet banking was CONVENIENCE.

I expect Internet security technology to be good enough that my user ID and my password would suffice.

Dr House, MD, was told: Wouldn’t you rather believe the best in somebody and then be disappointed than to always be cynical?

You would think the person who said that sits right at the extreme end of the cynic. But it is the better end. No?

I’m certain I will see you again before I leave.

Déjà vu.

I would like to believe him. But many a man has freely given many a fleeting promise that could make insurance firms go broke.

But he is one person I would like to believe. Because he wiped my hands dry when I got burnt. Because he moved my drink as I moved. Because he persuaded me to go for U2’s concert, and drove 2 ½ hours to pick me up and then 5 hours to Kansas City. Because he remembers my birthday every year.

I have not seen him in eight years. I forgot how sweet and thoughtful he can be. And how easy he is to be with.

And I am a bit sorry I hurt his feelings then. I never knew. But I am glad we are friends :)

afternoon @ work

I bought a 2/3 filled glass of warm barley drink for RM1.79. For goodness’ sake just charge me RM1.80. I didn’t even wait for the change.

That’s not the irritating part. The glass was 2/3 filled because they anticipate orders for iced-barley. Then they fill in the ice. BUT if you DON’T want ice, they don’t top it up. If you ask, they tell you frankly that the space is reserved for ice. Only ice.

Again, FOR GOODNESS’ SAKE- it’s just water!!!!! In fact, that 1/3 of barley water might even be less in volume than the ice when melted. But really, who cares about the petty stuff?

Classic example of third world mentality and customer care. Even when Mid Valley is like the Mall of America.

Don't ask me what I think about MAS spending millions on paintings. I don't have good feelings about a company that calls itself a national airline but doesn't own any assets and still manage to lose hundreds of millions after previous thousands of millions were hived off by the government. I don't want to think about ugly things this season.

Now, for some nice thoughts. My client may be sponsoring a theatre production!!! Everything is still preliminary. Not even preliminary. Like the Chinese say: "Ten lines but not even one stroke". Never mind if you are not Cantonese. But it sounds so fun and exciting! (The play, I mean)

Out Japan office is closed from today until Jan 4th!!!! I mean, they don't even celebrate Christmas! And our Manila office- Dec 16th to Jan 4th!!!!

I'm just sour grapes cos I have no more leave.

Sis is sick (try saying that 10 times).

Mom and I wiped down her fever with wet towels last night. The fever was so high she got jabs of pain moving from one part of her body to another. She has not slept for two nights. Cold wet towels made her squeel in pain. My poor sis. Mom was going to take her back to the clinic. I insisted she goes to the hospital emergency room in case she needs drips.

They took her blood. It showed nothing wrong. They gave her a jab, and the fever came down. She managed to sleep this afternoon. My poor sis.

Going to Auntie Lai Keen's house for Winter Festival dinner.

Ciao

Sneezing in Ipoh

Sneezing is a bad omen. I only sneeze when I am about to get sick. And I sneeze a lot every time I get back from Ipoh.

Gramps were of course very happy to see me.

The conversations with grandma are always the same.

You should wash your car. Do you wash your car? Yes grandma. Every week? No. Dad washes it for you? Yes. But you said you wash it. We both do. Every week? Not every week. If you wash it often, the car can last very long you know.

You drive a long way to work.Yes. You like your job? Yes. (I do). Then you should just stay there.

Grandma has a fear of me changing jobs. Or anyone changing jobs for that matter. I think there are two reasons for this. The first is the assumption that if you need to change jobs, then you are unhappy or that your boss is unhappy at you. The second is that the job is no good.

I tried rectifying those perceptions. I told grandma that changing jobs is in fact, a good thing. It means one can easily find another job, which signifies two things. The first is that there are plenty of jobs out there, which means the economy is growing. The second is that one is in demand, thus companies want to hire the person. Both are a good thing, I stressed. She didn’t seem convinced.

Maybe change is generally not welcomed when you are older and stability is preferred. I am afraid I will be grandma’s source of concern on end. I know that when she lays down to sleep and couldn’t, her mind wanders off in many negative directions.

It is hard to fault her for that habit. She has known more hardship and negative experiences than good in her life time.

Your brother is happy in UK? Very much so. He must earn a lot. Not really, but he is able to live comfortably. Maybe he can save a lot. A bit, I think. Maybe when he comes home he will have tens of thousands (converting pounds to ringgit). No, maybe teens of thousands. Only/ Yes. That;s very little. Teens of thousands is not very little (I was trying to protect my brother’s coffers as there are kiasu quarters in the family. Not grandma, but grandma might tell). But teens of thousands are so very little. Ok, ok then, if you want tens of thousands then let it be tens of thousands (and immediately regretted being so sarcastic. Still do)

I had let my irritability gotten the better of me. I hadn’t gone back to be rude. I had gone back to show Christ’ love!

Mom made me Hor Yan Hor herbal tea when I asked her to. In my ‘pleeese, I yam seeek’ tone. Mom’s so sweet, too.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You see that? Those are exclamation marks.

Make, bake, cake, kake, …and the letter between j and l is…….

I got a new keyboard. Rudi got sick of reading my blog and inserting the letter k mentally, I think.

So sweet!!!!! And it turns out that it is the exact same keyboard I was using! (And since it is my brother’s computer I am using, I guess Rudi and my brother must have the same technical minds J)

So cool!!!!! I mean, like, how many people actually get a keyboard for Christmas present, huh?

Speaking of Christmas presents, Joyce and I took a three-hour lunch today. We went to Mid-Valley to get Christmas socks for all in the office and to get some stuffing too – peppermint candy canes and caramel and fudge-filled chocolate santas. Joyce browbeat boss to cough out some budget for a little Christmas spirit in the office. I am glad she did.

Except we wasted one hour going round trying to get a parking bay. Ended up leaving Mid-Valley and went to BSC.

We put a sock on our Great Leader’s doorknob and put up tinsels on the ceiling. Hopefully we will fill up each other’s socks.

The girls were so happy!!!! Joyce YMs me to say it was all worth it that everyone’s happy. Joyce is so sweet.

I have so many sweet people in my life. I’m getting diabetic!!!!

Paul proposed. Vina said yes. In an orphange in Morocco. [big smile]

That was last Friday.

Wanted to now when I will be visiting again. I said -When Paul and Vina get married next year [exclamation, exclamation, exclamation]

The letter between j and l and the exclamation sign still do not wor. I need a new eyboard.

Got my phone bac after two wees in the worshop. They erased my favourite game. And that really cute picture of me CH too at Dome.

I need to thin of a way to launch a slew of new releases for my software client. Stumped.

loo out for the missing letter

Everyone's trying to access AirAsia for free ticets. My eyboard at home has a problem- the letter in between j and l does not function. So you now to mae up for it when spelling or words used seem wrong.

Anyways, no one can get in the website. The SJGC gang is trying. Chia Hui has been trying. FREE is still ing.

There are three erectile dysfunction drugs in the maret. And only one is specifically developed from scratch for the purpose of treating ED. That's Levitra. The other two- Viagra and Cialis- are apparently 'discovered' to wor for ED when they were on the way to being treatment for other things. Which is why Levitra is apparently the most effective and has the best safety profile.

That's a bit of mareting for my client. Interesting factoids. The client didn't say it- the lead investigator of the efficacy and safety study said it. Although the study was funded by my client.

I never new so much about ED as I do now.

Things seems to be looing up
-Boss has hired two new colleagues but I am also getting new clients.
-Feeling closer to CG members, no longer dragging me feet to CG
-Planned menu for CG Christmas party and I get hungry thining of it

Challenges
-Dream Centre Building Fund. We need people to fulfill their pledges but that only maes up RM11mil. We need another RM14mil, minimum.
-Taling to grandparents about Christ

I really wish there is more time in a day or more days in a wee that arent for wor . I want to catch up on Lost season II. I want to catch up on all the Fortunes I have not read. I want to get my finances in order and find out why I cannot account for several thousand. I want to sleep and sleep and sleep.

I want to join the roller blading community in Taman Tun. I get to pay RM160 for two months and I can go for lessons as many times as I lie [what did I say about being a sucer for promos]. The question mar and the rounded parentheses don't wor either. But you see, I can only go join the saters on weeends and I have not had lazing time for the past four, five, six maybe, weeends. So I say to myself I will join when I have two less hectic months, in a row. I wonder if that would happen anytime soon. Have not gone for futsal in months- Danny, don't give up on me.

I really wish there is more time.

Falling asleep...

li'l sis got a blog

I've added a link to it. You can check it out. And check her out. She's the one with the red scarf in case you get confused. I know, she looks nothing like me.

Ma petite soeur, elle est belle, non?

She's also not so little anymore since she will be getting her diploma after her exams end of this year. She might be on only 5'1" but she is a real cili padi and hottie.

I am so proud of her-- she wants FIRST MENTION!!!

And she wants to be the first female somelier in Asia!! Whoo hoo! I get all my wine advice from her so if I bring something bad for your party its her fault.
